2012 Success Story of the Year comes from Miki Yamada, NYC:
I PR’ed big time – by FIVE whole minutes!!
"I haven’t been training like I normally do since my injury pre-Boston; so that’s about 8 weeks now. My mileage is half of what it used to be and I was actually feeling pretty bummed. I didn’t do well in the Healthy Kidney 10K. I had gotten fatter (ha!) and just didn’t feel good. But I’ve been coming to DWR because I just LOVE your personality. You make me laugh and the class is a bright spot of my weekly training. The 45 minutes goes by so fast, I’m almost sad when it’s over. It’s such a big change from the other training I do, where I’m always happy when it’s done.
Brooklyn Half started really early, a 4AM wake up...
The first 0.25 mile was a down hill. In order to stop myself from over speeding, I told myself “one foot stride, one foot stride”. Short strides and fast arms, just like in the water! Then there was almost a mile of uphill. I found myself saying, “Uphill, two foot stride, two foot stride!” I could almost hear you, it was so funny, I started giggling. I even used my arms & elbows to “get away”! Once over the Flatbush Avenue hill, we turned around at Grand Army Plaza and we had to go down the hill – yep, I did the one foot stride. After mile 10, when things got a little harder but flatter, I said to myself, “Three foot stride, Three foot stride” and that helped me keep my pace and cadence. By mile 12, I was ready to blast to the finish!
What was extra funny was that when I saw Patricia at the end, she said the EXACT same thing about the strides!! That she said to herself “one foot stride, one foot stride” going down the hills in Prospect Park, and did the “Two foot stride, Two foot stride” going up.
The class worked so well and gave me an extra edge. I was the fastest female on my team. I was 29 in my age group, which is pretty amazing considering it’s the largest pool of runners. In fact, your class made such a huge difference, I’m really sorry, Robert, but I’m not going to share with others. I need to keep the class as my secret “speed” weapon. So while I super duper endorse your class, I can’t be counted as a recruiter!
... I’m just so excited about my PR!"
